vkSINGH-screen1Indian Army has been renowned for its powerful as well as undisputed history. Its first time when the army and the government are not only in a confrontational mood but the dispute of Army Chief’s age is likely to knock the doors of Supreme Court. Many commentators are interpreting it as a hole in army’s image but honestly this is stain of government’s tail. According to General V.K Singh, his actual date of birth according to his 10th and 12th certificates is May 10, 1951 which, by a clerical mistake, was written in his UPSC admit card as May 10, 1950. If his DOB is considered as May 1950 he’ll have to be retired on May 31, 2012 otherwise he would enjoy the post until March, 2013. General Singh simply requested the Defense Ministry to consider his real DOB instead of the false one but why did government initially kept the issue hanging and later turned recalcitrant giving a space for controversy, only government can answer it.
army chief dobThis is of common sense that any DOB related issue in a job is dealt considering only the minimum required education certificates therefore if government accepts the application of the General Singh nothing would be illegitimate but the government seems technically entangling the issue unnecessarily. Probably this would be the first case of its own type where the government is insisting to consider an error as proof over the certificates. The saying from the government, unnecessarily stubborn to create a controversy, that the General Singh’s move to SC is unfortunate is only reflecting the shameless importunity that he should accept any inconsistent decision of govt. On the one hand, govt. is trying to hit General Singh for his move to SC while on the other hand it, without any hesitance, is saying that the case will be resolved now only within the court.
It’s also a matter of surprise that the legal advice of attorney general to defense ministry which gave the ground to reject the general’s plea also looks ridiculous and stereotyped. Attorney general G.E Vahanvati argues that the High School or Inter marks sheets can’t be sole basis for considering the DOB at this stage. However, how can one justify this amazing argument that one’s education certificates, which were the eligibility proof while recruitment, have become outdated for an issue during the same job? Furthermore, govt. wants to consider General Singh’s erroneous UPSC form, which is in fact few months older than his 12th certificate, as basis of his DOB. Imagine if General Singh’s DOB in UPSC form, at that time, was fulfilling the eligibility criteria but his educational certificates couldn’t match with DOB written in form! Could he be selected for the job? Or did he not get booked under the case of forgery?
The govt is consistently coming up with nonsense arguments in spite of the fact that UPSC itself corrected the mistake later. The second argument of the govt states that General Singh has already accepted his DOB as May 1950 while his recruitment as the Army Chief and now he is betraying by demanding reconsideration in his DOB. The fact is that General Singh never accepted his inaccurate DOB, he only wrote to the then Army Chief Gen Deepak Kapoor that he believed in his leadership and was ready to obey him, in spite of his distinct thoughts. Another question may be asked that if govt wants to say that the Gen Singh was appointed as per deal or agreement? It’s also interesting that the advice by an Attorney General of a country is rebutted by four Ex-CJs and a solicitor general terming it as feeble. All four Ex-CJIs including G.B Patnaik and J.S Verma and Ex-solicitor general Gopal Subramaniam supported the Army Chief’s claim legally.
The Question is why did our govt. get stuck on such simple but sensitive issue? It’s clear from sources that there are few inside the army who were honestly sacked by Gen Singh in Sukna land scam and Adarsh Society scam. But the conspiracy against the Gen Singh might be initiated by such tainted officers, why govt is so tough and rude towards the Gen Singh? Does leaders, inside the govt, also have problem with an honest and dedicated Army Chief? Adarsh Society scam has been a big headache for the govt recently therefore all questions requires honest investigation in this direction.
Our media also didn’t show sufficient due patience, minding the image of our army on global platform, during the whole up and down. Some so called advocates of free speech tried to slam the Gen Singh directly. According to them, consulting former CJIs and telling his side to some persons Gen Singh committed disobedience of the democratic govt which is against the democracy and the people of India. But probably the commentators forget that an army-man takes oath of truth and serving his country not of obeying leaders blindly. Gen Manekshaw also denied following the order of then PM Indira Gandhi in 1971 war. Gen Singh has also cleared that he wanted the change in DOB only to protect his integrity, the decision on tenure is government’s right. One can’t expect a bigger sophism than saying that the Gen Singh’s move is against the people of India, everybody knows people of India always have greater belief and respect for our Army rather than in our political system, in this controversy too. Unfortunately those who are trying to teach lessons of duty to an honest and diligent army officer, have been advocating against the integrity of Kashmir from the stages of exposed ISI agent Gulam Navi Fai.
Army is clean and strongest pillar of India’s sovereignty and integrity, it would be better to keep it apart from the selfish political conspiracies and evil sights for which the govt. would have to be honest and enough sensitive towards this pillar of democracy.
